Öykümüz düşük I.Q. sahibi Forrest Gump'ın yaşamını ve hayatının aşkı olan Jenny ile tanışmasını anlatıyor. Film boyunca, Gump'ın aralarında Elvis Presley, Kennedy, Nixon'ın da olduğu tarihsel kişilerle kaza eseri tanışmasını 50'lerden 70'lerin sonuna kadar gelen bir süre zarfında izliyoruz.

Gump tamamen tesadüf olarak Vietnam savaşına ve Amerikan yakın tarihinin önemli olaylarına şahitlik ediyor ve hatta rol alıyor. Ancak bilmeden yaptıklarının ne kadar önemli sonuçları olduğundan da bihaber durumda.
